EAST
BAY INTERFAITH COMMITTEE FOR WORKER JUSTICE
(East Bay ICWJ)
The
East Bay ICWJ is a project of the East Bay Alliance for Sustainable Economy and is made up of a network of clergy and lay people
of faith who educate the public about the issues of
the working poor and support low-wage workers in Alameda
County in their struggles to win better wages, benefits
and working conditions.
Their
current projects include support for workers' rights
and contract campaigns in the port, hotel, healthcare and
laundry industries. In addition, they advocate for immigration
reform, wider access to healthcare, and economic development
that prioritizes good jobs. The East Bay ICWJ has played
a critical role in numerous campaigns that have dramatically
raised standards for low-wage workers.
The
Committee counts among its victories Living Wage policies
at the Port of Oakland and the City of Berkeley that
benefit over 3,500 workers; the organizing of 200 workers
at the Doubletree Hotel; a contract campaign that won
dental and vision care for 10,000 Alameda County home
health care workers; as well as pioneering work advancing
dialogue between immigrant groups and African-American
congregations that has helped create new coalitions
and partnerships.
