Join Religious Leaders Calling for A Covenant for Civility: Christian pastors and leaders with diverse theological and political beliefs, have come together to make a covenant with each other, and to commend it to faith communities, organizations and individuals, so that together we can contribute to a more civil national discourse. The church in the United States can offer a message of hope and reconciliation to a nation that is deeply divided by political and cultural differences. Too often, however, we have reflected the political divisions of our culture rather than the unity we have in the body of Christ. We come together to urge those who claim the name of Christ to “ put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:31-32). NY Times Article: Toyota Sees Growing Anger from Suppliers in Japan |
Religious leaders prepare to bless NUMMI workers and call for Toyota to Repent
On March 4 at pre-dawn CLUE leaders will bless auto workers outside the NUMMI plant in Fremont as they embark on a pilgrimage throughout California, calling attention to the impact of Toyota's decision to close the NUMMI plant. The ripple effect of Toyota's decision goes far beyond the almost 5,000 bay area workers sending shock waves throughout the state affecting 1,000 suppliers and an estimated 25,000 workers. None of whom will get severance packages.
Initially the community accepted the loss of the plant as part of the downturn in the economy but recently discovered that while Toyota is closing NUMMI they are investing billions of dollars in new plants in Texas and Mississippi. Toyota, once committed to its workforce, holding standards of loyalty, safety and integrity, appears to have lost its way.
The Rev. Bruce Reyes-Chow, Moderator, Presbyterian Church, USA will join the delegation of business, political and environmental leaders to deliver the Blue Ribbon Commission Report to Toyota decision-makers. The delegation will call on Toyota to delay the plant closure until California gets back on its feet. READ MORE |
